Apple is planning to bring a new feature called “Repair State” to iPhones with iOS 17.5. This new feature allows you to send the iPhone for service or say to the service center without turning off or deactivating Find My and Activation Lock.

Recently, we saw the 4th developer beta of iOS 17.5, in which Apple added a new “Remove this device” option for all devices in Find My Device. By using this with iPhone, it puts the iPhone into repair state, a new feature added to iPhone after the 4th beta of iOS 17.5.

As of now, if we send our iPhone for repair, then Find My has to be turned off for this, and Apple says that they will not be able to repair iPhone devices that have Find My activated and if you turn off Find My, it will disable Activation Lock. As we know, Activation Lock is an important anti-theft security feature that prevents your iPhone from being used with another Apple ID.

As far as I know, the “Remove this device” option from Find My to enable repair state is only available in iPhones. When using this feature on other Apple devices like Apple Watch or Mac, you will get a warning that this feature will remove the device from the ‌Apple ID‌ account and after that, it can be used by someone else. This feature will be available with iOS 17.5 stable this month i.e. May. Also, as of now, this feature is still in development.

Note: The iPhone must be online and trackable via Find My for the Repair State option to pop up. Also, keep in mind that currently, Repair State cannot be disabled.
